Black History Month, October 2017

MESSAGE FROM PRIME MINISTER THERESA MAY

I am proud to support BHM & I want to pay tribute to everyone who, over the last 30 years, has helped to support this opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary contribution that our African & African Caribbean communities make to our UK.

Today, in every walk of life, from business to politics, sport to culture, there are African & African Caribbean men & women whose achievements are not just making our country a better place but inspiring others to follow in their footsteps to even greater success.

So as we mark the 30th anniversary of Black History Month, it is right to look back with pride on the progress that has been made in taking on racism & discrimination. But I am also clear just how far we have to go, not just in rooting out hatred & prejudice from our society, but in tackling injustices that still hold back too many people in our country today.

That is why this BHM I am publishing the first results of the work which I commissioned within months of becoming PM – an unprecedented audit of public services to reveal racial disparities right across government. It exposes some uncomfortable truths about the injustices that still exist in our society today – from health & education to the welfare & criminal justice systems.

As PM I make no apology for exposing these truths. I believe it is my duty to shine a light on these injustices & I want to lead a national effort to address them so that Britain can truly become a country that works for everyone. That is my pledge this BHM & I hope you will work with me to make it a reality.

Rhodes Must Fall - Racist Monuments/Statues

BBC R4's Archive on 4 - 16/9/17

From Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College or Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville - public statuary is a lightning conductor for popular protest and unrest. But why are these figures of the past - often erected in another era with different moral expectations - so often in the front line of political conflict today? Lawrence Pollard and guests gather in the sound archives to listen to the symbolic moments that statues fall and explore the difference between iconoclasm by the powerful and powerless and what these events tell us about history, identity and nature of collective memory. With Dr Madge Dresser, Dr Rahul Rao, Afua Hirsch and Tiffany Jenkins.

Black Sporting Heroes & She-roes

Black American artist, Henry Taylor (b. 1958) painted the Georgia, USA-born black sporting hero Alice Coachman Davis (1923-2014, aged 91), in his 2011 work, See Alice jump.
Alice Coachman Davis was the, 1st black woman to win an Olympic gold medal.
7th August 1948: Alice Coachman (of Tuskegee Uni) became the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in track & field.

The 1948 Olympic Games saw Fanny Blankers-Koen, "a big, raw-boned Dutchwoman", win 4 gold medals. 6 August 1948, Blankers-Koen had completed the inaugural Olympic 200m sprint for women in 24.4 secs, only 7/10th  of a second ahead of runner-up Audrey Williamson

Audrey Patterson, the first African American woman to win an Olympic medal, was placed in third, although a finish photo discovered decades later indicates Shirley Strickland should have won the bronze.

Black Evacuees in Britain WWI / WWII

It was this book, by Ben Wicks, that prompted me to ask the question, 'Were there any Black Evacuees in Britain WWI / WWII?'

Not much of a Black presence at the National Arboretum Museum.
Apparently the BWIR is in the process of gaining a memorial.

Come on peeps - let's get our act together.
How many thousands of people who visit the National Arboretum Museum each year are being left with the impression that black people did not contribute.

Black British History: A Pointless Project?

To what extent is the study of Black British History a pointless project?

It's NOT a pointless project at all, so long as it is remembered that it may be more of a journey than a destination.
